2. Organic Vs Non Organic Oranges

ORGANIC ORANGES RICHER IN VITAMIN C

Organically grown oranges contain up to 30 percent more vitamin C than those grown conventionally, scientists say. The report, presented at a meeting of the American Chemical Society, shows that while conventionally grown fruit is larger and deeper in its orange hue, the half-sized organic variety contains more of the vitamin.

Theo Clark, visiting chemistry professor at Truman State University in Kirksville, Mo., said he decided to conduct the study because of a lack of analytical information about the nutritional content of organically grown produce.

"Quite often, organic goods come from smaller farms that market their goods with provocative labels such as 'healthy,' 'delicious' or 'natural,'" he said. "These statements are generally made without reference to any comparable standards."

Clark chose oranges to begin the assessment because they are high-profile fruits. "The orange is the traditional source of vitamin C, and it is highly commercialized, but no one to our knowledge has thought to compare the organic and conventionally grown oranges," he said.

Scientists do not yet know the reasons for the added nutritional value.

"We speculate that with conventional oranges, (farmers) use nitrogen fertilizers that cause an uptake of more water, so it sort of dilutes the orange. You get a great big orange, but it is full of water and doesn't have as much nutritional value," Clark said.

As an aside to this information, I often tell my customers that it is better to buy the organic citrus oils. The reason for this is that the pesticides are not present and therefore, since citrus oils are cold pressed (usually the rind), I do believe it is a better product. Especially, if using in any massage or skin care creation.

3. Perfumer's Emporium - Wish List

~ Beeswax Absolute
Perhaps better known under its French name, Absolue Cire d'Abeille.

This comparatively rare perfume material is an alcohol-soluble extract from crude yellow beeswax. The beeswax is cleaned of mechanical impurities by melting and subsequent straining.

The Toilet Goods Assn. defines Beeswax as the 'purified honeycomb of the bee, Apis Mellifera, free from all other waxes'.

Beeswax Absolute is a solid, waxy mass of pale yellow color and a very mild, sweet, oily odor, with a haylike or coumarinic bodynote and a soft waxy undertone.

The odor is remotely reminiscent of good (not harsh) linseed oil with a trace of honey notes. The odor of Beeswax Absolute is strongly dependent upon the origin of the beeswax (i.e., the hunting ground of the bees).

Useful in perfumes where similar notes occur. Blends well into Jasmine, mimosa, cassie, violet. As well as in the perfume base in which a meadow-like sweetness and heavy, honey-like floral notes are predominant (i.e., helichrysum, flouve, liatris, chamomile, etc.)

4. Honoring Father's Day

When I was working in civil service I had the honor of working with many remarkable and caring men. Throughout my 20 years of service I really had an opportunity to observe and learn from many of them.

I listened to them talk about their families, the joy their wife and children brought them. Their playfulness and reminding me to not just live life but to enjoy it.

They were compassionate and had a remarkable sense of humor considering the conditions we were in. But most of all .. it was their sense of fair play that impressed me.

They encouraged me .. showed me how to laugh at myself and how to just 'roll with life'.

And to the men in my immediate family, my Grandpa who always reminded me of a sturdy oak tree. Silent and yet playful. He was my anchor. My Step Dad Papa Tom .. who understood me so well .. I will always remember his words of wisdom.

The following is the history of why Father's Day was created:

Sonora Louise Smart Dodd of Spokane, Wash., got the idea to set aside a special day to honor fathers in 1909, after listening to a sermon on Mother's Day.

She wanted to honor her father, William Jackson Smart. Smart's wife died in 1898, and he raised their six children on his own.

Dodd drew up a petition recommending adoption of a national father's day. The Spokane Ministerial Association and the local Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) supported it.

Through Sonora Dodd's efforts, Spokane celebrated the first Father's Day on June 19, 1910. Over the years, many resolutions to make the day an official national holiday were introduced.

Finally, in 1972, President Richard M. Nixon signed Father's Day into law.
