Prepared from the leaves of the Ilex paraguayensis and other ilex species. These trees grow wild and cultivated in Latin American countries. The cultivated trees are usually pruned to bush size to facilitate picking of the leaves. The forests where the trees grow are known as 'yerbales', and the leaves are called 'yerba mate.' The leaves are dried, usually over a smoldering fire of certain woods. The smoke from the fire enhances the dry-smoky flavor which derives from phenolic and tannic materials in the leaves. The dry leaves are either cut or ground to a coarse powder which are the commercial forms of Mate. The pot from which the infusion is usually taken (through a special straw) is called Mate (the original, local name) hence the name of the leaves. It is only recently that perfumers have become interested in mate. Mate Absolute is prepared by extraction of the dry leaves (concrete) with alcohol. Mate Absolute is a semi solid, sticky, very dark green mass. It has a very peculiar, rich herbaceous, dry leaf, woody foliage like and somewhat phenolic or smoky, medicinal odor, resembling that of the leaves. Mate is used in perfumery to introduce a pronounced greenness in floral bouquets. The green notes of mate are free from the sharpness which usually accompanies the 'green' odor materials. Mate absolute or tincture blends well with orange flower bases, jasmin, oakmoss, coumarin and its derivatives, lavender absolute, spice oils, etc. Please visit our Perfumer's Emporium Page Ref: Steffen Arctander With the holiday season fast approaching, we are always looking for that 'special' gift for that someone special. I'm reprinting the article written by Gail as more and more of us are moving to the 'natural' scents that have more depth (and healthier for us!) Give a 'custom made' blend as a gift ~ or as a gift to yourself .. to honor you.! Article ~ by Gail Adrian Fragranceur Many of you are experienced in the blending together of essential oils to create a "synergy," a term referring to the combination of different essential oils that merge together to become a resulting unit that is an entity all its own. The art of Traditional botanical perfumery also uses synergies. These are referred to as "accords" or "chords." Using an extended palette of aromatic materials, a fine artisan perfume is infused into a high quality alcohol base. The use of alcohol rather than oil for tradition perfumery allows for a greater "lift" into the surrounding air along with a greater range of fragrant notes to be perceived. A fine perfume first lifts itself up into the air, then reveals its components incrementally in various stages. Finally, the perfume will settle down to veil the skin subtly, yet with easy discernment. An artful perfume reveals itself in the same way as a well written symphony. It begins with a seductive and inviting introduction. This alluring beginning attracts the nose and encourages one to continue experiencing the evolving orchestration of aromas. Soon after this initial hit, one is able to settle down deeply into the theme, or heart of the perfume. Heavier than the top, this heart is the soul of the perfume. In addition to continuing and developing the theme of the perfume, the heart marries the top and the base notes of a perfume blend. You might say that the heart of a perfume is an aromatic expression of harmony and unity. The final and often most defining aspect of a perfume composition lies in its base, or dry out phase. This is the most long-lasting aspect of perfume. This aromatic base melts into the individual and unique personal scent of ones own skin, creating an aromatic calling card that clings to the wearer and bestows aromatic sweetens to those who draw close. As a traditional botanical perfumer, I have studied this sacred and elusive art all my life. It is my privilege to create for my clients uniquely personal scents that express that which they wish to say without words. If you are interested in experiencing this ethereal art for yourself or to give as a gift, I would be delighted to work with you. And yes, I am one of those that love the rain. There is so much saddness going on in the world around us right now .. The shootings in Maryland .. the horror of those poor families that lost a loved one. The Mom walking her son to school, the man pumping gas for his car .. Congress getting ready to endorse a war.. the tragedy of the multi-car wreck in Wisconsin. Our lives can be changed so dramatically in a moment of time. Louis L.
