Black Pepper ~ Organic
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Botanical Name: Piper nigrum
Family: Piperaceae
Country of Origin: Madagascar
Extraction Method: Steam Distillation
Plant Part Used: dried, crushed ripe fruits of the pepper vine
(black peppercorns)
One of the very oldest and highly revered spices, used in India for over 4,000 years, mainly for urinary and liver disorders. The root word comes from Sanskrit "pippali', changed to the Latin 'piper'. The Romans paid their taxes with this spice rather than coins. It was used extensively in Greece to combat fever. During the Middle Ages the Pepper Trade was very important between India and Europe. In Medieval England Black pepper was used in charms and amulets for protection, most likely because it was used as an antidote to poison and used to prevent the spread of infection.
Lets not forget ~
~ This is Leap Year 2004! Occurring every 4 years, by the addition of a day in the month of February, which in that year will have 29 days. Leap Year was the traditional time that women could propose marriage. It is believed that this tradition was started in 5th century Ireland when St Bridget complained to St Patrick about women having to wait so long for a man to propose. So, as legend has it, St Patrick said the yearning females could propose on this one day in February during leap year.
* the Ides of March. (March 15) When Julius Caesar ignored that warning and you know what happened to him.! Did you know the Ides of March is the first day of the Roman New Year and also marked the first day of spring in the Roman Calender. Et tu Brute~! The cruelest cut. ouch!
~ St Patty's Day - (March 17) St Patrick was the missionary credited with converting the Irish to Christianity in the late 300's A.D. Today, St Patty's Day is basically a time to wear green and party. The first American celebration of St Patrick's Day was in Boston, Massabhusetts, in 1737. As the saying goes, on this day 'everybody is Irish'. Over 100 U.S. cities now hold St Patrick's Day parades, the largest held in New York City ;o) .
* Celebrating Spring Equinox ~ (March 20th) The spring equinox is one of the four great solar festivals of the year. Day and night are equal, poised and balanced, but about to tip over on the side of light. The spring equinox is sacred to dawn, youth, the morning star and the east.
A time of rebirth. New beginnings.
